Jessica Pidoux (@pidoux) explains in this interview that personal data collection and processing by dating applications remains opaque: for instance there is no visibility about the criteria used to present one user to another.
With dating app users and people keen to understand privacy in relationships formed online, she works to understand what’s being done and leads the Dating privacy data collective project., that started in November 2020.
What does Dating privacy actually do? The collective is addressing four goals:
- Mapping the data collected by dating applications
- Raising awareness among a maximum number of users by making this mapping as visible as possible through our own publications and articles in the media
- Conceptualising the notion of privacy and thus be able to define users’ rights in the specific context of dating applications
- Providing the dating app user community with the tools to assert these rights and take back power over their data
If you want to contribute, you can also ask for your data through this tool provided by with the great support of HestiaLabs or contact the collective.
